Psychophysiology on Display at Upcoming Sports Psychology Conferences

In the highly competitive world of elite and professional sport every part of an athlete's training regimen matters. Peak performance physiology training allows athletes to see their progress as they practice.

Sport psychologists are increasingly turning to psychophysiology to help athletes mentally prepare for their game and learn to reach an optimal performance zone quickly and consistently. Psychophysiology training involves the use of equipment designed to monitor physiological signals like heart rate variability, brain activity, emotional arousal, peripheral temperature, breathing and muscle tension.  This information is fed back to the athlete in real time. Athletes can see how their body reacts to the environment, thoughts, emotions and stress. With training they can be taught how to recognize and control these reactions thereby enhancing performance.

Imagine you are in penalty kicks in a World Cup Final. If you score you win. There are two billion people watching on TV and 100,000 are in the stands. As you walk towards the ball, you look around the stadium. No one is seated. You see your country's flag everywhere and the weight of your country is on your shoulders. How do you feel? If you are like most people, your shoulders are tense, your breathing is shallow, your hands are sweating, and your heart and mind are racing. This is Stress.
But what if you had a tool to learn how to counteract this stress? 
Widely used, visualization is most powerful when practiced in a deep state of relaxation.  Using Psychophysiology training we can ensure mental rehearsal is having a maximal transfer to performance.

Imagine an athlete who has a two minute shift in hockey, and spends the next four minutes on the bench. Is he able to make a maximal recovery so he is mentally focused for his next shift? What happens to performance if he is not? Heart rate variability training can teach him how to recover completely.

Reaction time is crucial for many sports: passing the puck, goalies making a diving save; reacting to your opponent's tennis serve; getting off the starting block – and more. When working to shave hundredths of a second off a time, milliseconds matter. Reaction time training with a device that is accurate to 0.5 MS is essential.

How Peak Performance Physiology Training  Can Enhance Your Sport Psychology Practice

Anyone working with elite or professional athletes knows that the days where one trains only for their specific sport are over. Training regimens can include weight training, endurance training, sports nutrition, yoga for flexibility, and even things like hypoxic chambers and cryotherapy. And, of course, there is mental training.

The Next Level In Science and Mental Conditioning
Mental training plays an important role in helping to shape the mental and emotional state of the athlete to increase their ability to deal with pressure and to thrive under difficult conditions. But, how do you know if your training is having the desired effect?

An athlete’s emotions and thoughts lead to changes in physiology that are both measurable and controllable. Peak performance physiology training involves the use of equipment that monitors a variety of physiological signals and feeds this information back to a computer where the information is displayed in real time. Athletes can see how their body reacts to emotions and stress, and can learn how to control these reactions. They can objectively tell when they lose focus or are hindering their own performance, then correct it and get their body and mind back in the game.

At the BFE 18th Annual Meeting in Rome, Dr. Bruno Demichelis (22 years of experience with AC Milan and work with Chelsea football club and the Vancouver Canucks) and Dr. Tim Harkness (Chelsea football club) gave a keynote address on the use biofeedback and neurofeedback in sports. Their presentation focused on what they have gleaned from the psychophysiological data of over 250 elite athletes they have trained. You can view the full presentation below.

What is Peak Performance Physiology Training?
Athletes using peak performance physiology training learn to  bring themselves to a place that combines mental clarity and sustained energy with a sense of inner calm and active engagement. Virtually everyone experiences these moments of flow at some point in their lives. Elite athletes learn how to access them when they need to.

heart rate; respiration rate; skin conductance; muscle activity; peripheral body temperature; brainwaves; reaction time

Peak performance training involves understanding one's self and learning how to put one's body and
mind in a state to perform at the maximum level. A good example is how tension carried in the shoulders can decrease the range of physical movement,  which in turn affects performance. Your brain creates the tension so, change the brain, lose the tension. Similarly, an athlete's breathing techniques might not be optimal, but since every person is different there is no "one size fits all" solution. An athlete's respiration rate can be assessed in order to determine the best breathing techniques specific to that individual. The concept of focus is used a lot in sports, but often athletes don't know what that is in terms of physical calmness and mental intensity. Focus can be taught through brain training and can help to minimize over-anxiety and 'trying-too-hard', while still maintaining the commitment to do well.

Optimizing Performance and Health Software Suite

The Learning Curve for Infiniti Users

Two of the most popular requests the BFE receives from our clients and supporters are for:
  • the ability to produce qEEG assessments using the familiar Thought Technology neurofeedback equipment;
  • assessment reports that automatically analyze the EEG data to produce a personalized training plan. 
As is the tradition that the new year bring new possibilities, the BFE is excited to announce that as of 2016 we offer a software suite that accomplishes both of those requests and more: the newly re-vamped Learning Curve (TLC) Suite also known as the Trainer's Q and whole-brain training plan.

The Learning Curve (TLC) Suite
The Learning Curve (TLC) Suite is a brain assessment method that allows a clinician to amalgamate data from up to 20 different EEG sites on the head, into the specialized TLC report. This multi-faceted TLC report, developed by Peter Van Deusen at Brain Trainer, provides clinicians with three main functions:
  • a multi-view report that describes the patterns in the EEG, including the relative speed of the EEG waves, key bandwidth amplitude ratios, brain maps (similar to those seen in QEEG maps), breakdown of amplitudes across the head, differentials between analogous sites of the left/right hemisphere;
  • automatic analysis of the EEG brain data in the form of training recommendations for a complete whole-brain training plan;
  • an executive summary narrative report detailing findings from the EEG data in an easy-to-understand manner for both the clinician and patient;

Sample Screens & Reports

The TLC Suite also includes a subjective report of the client's history and symptoms, which integrates into the TLC report and alters the training recommendations for the whole-brain training plan. This means the software takes the specific client's circumstances into account and alters its recommendation based on what would be personally best for them.

A major advantage of the TLC suite and method is that it is an EEG pattern-based assessment tool rather than population-based tool. In other words, it is descriptive rather than normative: it focuses the trainer's attention on patterns in the EEG that have been identified in QEEG research to be correlated with various symptom constellations and clinical syndromes, guiding the trainer toward interventions likely to have rapid positive effects. It does not base its analysis and recommendations on imperfect population databases.

Multiple Language Reporting
An exciting feature for our multi-lingual software users around the globe is that the full TLC report can be viewed in any of four different languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish or Italian.

Reasonable Price with No Limits
As initially stated, use of the TLC Suite assessment and report allows for the output of data comparable to a full QEEG evaluation, without the cost of purchasing excessive hardware and software to support such a method. All an individual needs is the standard ProComp 2 or Infiniti encoders, made by Thought Technology, along with 2 or 4 EEG-Z sensors/channels of EEG for collecting brainwave data.

Unlike other assessment methods, the cost for this automated EEG analysis tool is a one-time fee with no limits on the numbers of evaluations that can be run through the system. There are no yearly fees for use and no future upgrade costs.

How Does the TLC Suite Work?
The assessment within the TLC Suite gathers brain data in sets of 2 or 4 sites (depending on your preference) over a 3 minute period. The same assessment protocol is repeated at different sets of brain sites, until all desired locations have been monitored. The data from all the assessment protocols are then imported into the TLC report, which analyzes the numbers to output a whole-brain training plan. The full assessment data acquisition period can be accomplished in only 1-hour.

Mindfulness and Biofeedback

Google the term "mindfulness" and you'll see that the results are in the millions. Mindfulness is currently being used by therapists, psychologists and other mental health providers. It is often used in combination with yoga and meditation and is increasingly being introduced in schools and offices. Some of the benefits of mindfulness include stress reduction, reduced rumination, better focus, less emotional reactivity and a greater sense of well being. Mindfulness training has been used to help clients with conditions such as anxiety, headaches and chronic pain, to name a few.

So What is Mindfulness?
Dr. Inna Z. Khazan defines it as: "Mindfulness allows people to become truly aware of the present moment, to tell the difference between what they can and cannot change, and then focus their attention on the things they can change."

What makes Dr. Khazan's work in mindfulness unique is that she takes the technique one step further by combining it with biofeedback. A biofeedback assessment that measures heart rate, respiration, skin conductance, skin temperature and muscle activity provides the client with a window into what is going on in their body and how it reacts to stress.  The results of the initial assessment can help determine the best mindfulness techniques to use with each client. Real-time training with biofeedback can measure the effect mindfulness training has on ones physiology.

On the flipside of that, professionals already using biofeedback can add a mindfulness element to their training.  According to Dr. Khazan, "After analyzing the cases where biofeedback was not immediately successful, I realized that the reason for the lack of progress with biofeedback in some cases was that we were trying hard to change what was not changeable at that moment. Using mindfulness transformed my biofeedback work. I suddenly had a way to help my clients get unstuck and make progress. My clients and I learned to allow what is outside of our control to stay and apply our efforts to things we could control."

Mindfulness Software Suite
The BFE has collaborated with Dr. Inna Khazan to create a software suite that combines the use of mindfulness and biofeedback as described in her book The Clinical Handbook of Biofeedback: A Step-by-Step Guide for Training and Practice with Mindfulness. Compatible with the BioGraph Infiniti software, the BFE Mindfulness suite includes:
  • Psychophysiological stress profile assessment with automatic graphing of results into an easy-to-read excel reports.
  • Relaxation profile assessment for evaluation which relaxation or meditative technique is best suited for the client's individual self regulation. The assessment an automated excel report that graphs relevant data into easy-to-read graphs.
  • Resonance frequency evaluation with automatic graphing of results, to simplify data analysis.
  • Pre-grouped monitoring and training screens, that follow Dr. Khazan’s style of biofeedback training. Data is obtained from muscle tension, respiration, heart rate (BVP or EKG), skin conductance and temperature. The display screens are for 1 or 2-monitor setups.
  • Documentation in the form of a software manual that instructs the users how to make use of all technical aspects of the equipment, sensor, and software setup, as well as sample client data. The software manual also references the specific chapters and pages of Dr. Khazan's book for relevant clinical information.
Utility-aside, this software suite has been enhanced with pleasing designs and a superior overall esthetic that any clinician and client will appreciate. No need for those ugly motifs and unintuitive setups that reduce the overall impact of your sessions.

In order to encourage the success of other clinicians, Dr. Khazan has also included several relaxation text scripts to be used with clients during the relaxation profile assessment. The video below provides a brief overview of the software.

Inna Khazan, Ph.D., BCB, is a Clinical Instructor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, where she teaches biofeedback. FREE Upcoming Mindfulness Event - Dr. Licia Grazzi
On January 25th, the BFE is pleased to welcome Dr. Licia Grazzi who will be presenting a webinar on mindfulness and migraines. In this presentation, Dr. Grazzi will discuss her current clinical research on an over-medicated population group that suffer from chronic migraines. She will primarily focus on her most recent study that compares the success rates of two treatment outcomes for migraine sufferers: the use of a mindfulness-based behavioral approach and the use of traditional pharmacological medication. Her webinar includes a review of general non-pharmacological benefits to the treatment of chronic migraines, as well as an introduction to a mindfulness-based behavioral approach to therapy.

Dr. Grazzi is an executive neurologist at the Headaches Center at the Besta Hospital in Milan, actively collaborated with Frank Andrasik, PhD, and has 30 years of experience with CBT techniques and biofeedback.

Zukor's Carnival and Zukor Media Player

We've just added two new Zukor products to the BFE online shop!
Following an enthusiastic turnout for the free demonstration of Zukor's Air in the spring of 2015, the BFE is scheduling  a similar demonstration for Zukor's Carnival and Zukor Media Player. Not sure what the two newest Zukor Interactive games are? Then please read on.

Training with Carnival Games
Have you ever been to a local fair or amusement park, where there were simple games lining the walkways? Games like tossing a ring onto a post, throwing a dart through balloon and knocking over stacked blocks with a ball, along with the accompanying stuffed animals and toy prizes for doing well? Zukor's Carnival takes this familiar experience and packages into an immersive and entertaining biofeedback and neurofeedback game.

The hallmark of what makes Zukor's Carnival great, not to mention the other Zukor Interactive products, is that self-regulation is the basis of the game. Unlike in reality, a clients' success isn't based on the flick of their wrist when throwing a dart, or how they hold the ball. Instead, it's their ability to maintain the desired psychophysiological state based on heart rate variability, brainwaves or other measurements, which determines if the ring/ball/dart hits the target. Points are scored as clients do well in the games and amassing enough points allows the unlocking of the other 9 games.

Mixed amongst the standard fairground games are also creative, fantastical plays on real-work games. Anyone up for bouncing fireballs onto a target?

Zukor's Carnival is a great addition to the Zukor repetoir of bio/neurofeedback games, and it really is a creative jump in a new direction from the predecessors Zukor's Grind and Air. The only potential drawback is that some of your clients might really want you to give them a giant stuffed animal after a successful feedback session.

Zukor Media Player - Easy Movie and Video Feedback

Based solely on its name, Zukor Media Player is a predicatively easy tool to understand: it plays media. Videos, music, still images - anything you can download onto your computer or insert into your DVD/CD drive, it can use. You might ask yourself "Well what does it use this media for? Zukor Media Player provides an easy answer to "I wish I could use that for our biofeedback/neurofeedback session". With the player, a clinician can now throw any common video file, picture, song, DVD or CD into a feedback protocol.

Have some cute photos of a client's children? It can use that.
Downloaded an awesome video WITH sound? It can use that.
Want to play the client's favorite music? It can use that.

On-top of the Zukor Media Player's ability to use all common file formats, it can even add feedback effects on-top of the original video/pictures/music. For example, when training an athlete to "get in the zone", the chosen video or movie will play normally as they maintain the desired elevated state of self-regulation. If the athlete, however, falls out of focus, we can choose to have the video image slowly blur, as if the viewer is closing their eyes. Their personalized session is created from your choice of video and the applied negative feedback effect. If they don't like the blurring effect, you can instead have clouds move over the image, or make the picture shrink...

You can even mix-and-match feedback effects: a second example could be when that ideal state remains un-attained, the video's sound can be set to decrease in volume AND the video image slowly gets covered in rainfall AND distorts. Based on preference, 16 potential effects can be applied to manipulate the feedback of a video file, from pixilation, snow falling, glittery stars rising, loss of colour, fisheye distortion...

With the Zukor Media Player, a clinician can personalize the feedback content to each client, without the typical hassles that come with the common feedback programs on their own: few to no compatibility problems; no "place the file in a certain folder location"; no being stuck with ugly videos and pictures. Just useful time spent with the client.

YouTube Upgrade
An as optional extra, you can get creative with the choice of feedback videos using the internet's biggest cache of them. With an additional YouTube upgrade, clinicians just need to enter in the address to their favorite YouTube video so that Zukor Media Player will use that for feedback. No need to buy or download animations to the computer. Clients can even get the option to choose some of their favorite YouTube videos for the sessions, with minimal hassle for the clinic.

Grand Rounds Sessions with Linda Walker

Due to popular request, the BFE is beginning two new series of grand rounds on Anxiety and Z-Scores.

So what exactly are BFE grand rounds?
•    they are an opportunity to hear case presentations on assessing and treating clients from specific populations or using certain clinical paradigms; and
•    they are your chance to present your own client case to a group of clinicians, and get an expert's opinion on how best to proceed.

The leader for these sessions will be Linda Walker, MHR, LPC.  Linda is an experienced clinician with extensive knowledge of biofeedback who also has superb teaching skills. These attributes, combined with her easy going manner, make her one of our highest rated online instructors. Linda has previously taught online classes on Heart Rate Variability, Tinnitus and Neurofeedback, and Z-Scores and she presented two in-person workshops at the BFE's Rome meeting this past spring. Whether you're new to the field or have been using biofeedback for a while, we invite you to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

Anxiety Grand Rounds

The second and third sessions, on December 1st and 15th, will be opportunities for attending clinicians to present their client cases to Linda, in order to get an expert opinion. Linda will provide her interpretation of the assessment data and suggestions on what type of intervention that would provide the greatest benefit to the clinician's client.

The first session on November 19th will focus on Linda Walker presenting several cases of evaluation and training of clients with the use Z-Scores. Z-Scores is the normative-based neurofeedback training based on Dr. Robert Thatcher's Neuroguide Database.
The second and third sessions, on December 3rd and 17th, will be opportunities for attending clinicians to present their client cases to Linda, in order to get an expert opinion. Linda will provide her interpretation of the Z-Score assessment data and suggestions on how to proceed with neurofeedback training for the particular circumstance.

In her private practice working with a general population, Linda integrates a variety of methods with an extensive focus on biofeedback, neuorfeedback and QEEG. In addition, she teaches biofeedback and neurofeedback at Western Michigan University and serves as president of the Midwest Society of Behavioral Medicine and Biofeedback.

Expand Your Knowledge with BFE Class and Webinar Recordings

Whether you are new to biofeedback or a seasoned professional, you can benefit from a variety of recorded instruction available in the BFE Online Shop. We have worked with leaders in the field to develop educational content designed to expand your knowledge of bio and neurofeedback.

Why do clinicians come to us, the Biofeedback Federation of Europe (BFE)?
We offer a prolific collection of educational recordings for the practical use of biofeedback and neurofeedback with various clinical populations. Our offerings are competitively priced, and are delivered by direct download for you to permanently own - as opposed to other groups which rent informational recordings for one month or require subscription fees. You can learn at your own pace and re-watch the recordings as often as you like.

What type of individuals can benefit from BFE's offerings?
Any health professional that wants to actively apply biofeedback and/or neurofeedback in their practice, or gain an understanding of the application of such techniques for specific disorders. These professionals can be:
•    new to the field, looking for their first experience with biofeedback or neurofeedback technology;
•    experienced clinicians that desire to expand their practice to cover additional client population(s) or treatment tools and options;
•    professionals looking to fulfill their continuing education requirements.

The Biofeedback Federation of Europe is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Biofeedback Federation of Europe maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
